27 September, 1942

Hello my dear mother, father, (       ) and all relatives and friends. Today is the second day since I have been on the front lines where the greatest battle in human history is taking place. We are fighting for Tsaritsyn (The city of Stalingrad pervious name). In this post card it is hard to describe all the horrors and delights (sarcastic) of the fighting. I only can say that there is not a second without the sound of artillery volleys, the howls of shells, snipers and the fire from machine guns. Above us every minutes there are dozens of German airplanes flying. On the other side of there are German tanks on the frontlines and in the rear. Here we have a shortage of water. It is delivered. As long as we have bread, we will not go hungry. I do not know what is going to happen in the next hour. I share a trench with another solider. Everywhere there are corpses. Such is the law of war. We are hoping for the best. We are going to win without a doubt. In the last three days I have walked one hundred kilometers, we also traveled by train. (      ) Greeting.
